Putting Things in Context: The New Orchestrations

Nowadays, there is a proliferation of film music orchestrations that resemble The Planets by Gustav Holst. This phenomenon emerged after composer John Williams wrote the music for Star Wars.

From there, the rise of software programs that facilitate such orchestrations became evident. The evolution was swift. New digital instruments are displacing traditional writing, and manuscripts are disappearing. Perhaps the same will happen with sheet music, as the quality of sampled sounds continues to improve. When paired with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) instruments, they achieve remarkable excellence.

The ease of orchestrating with the help of digital software has led to the emergence of thousands of composers who, even without formal musical training or knowledge of the instruments they work with, can produce music with the ease of a Ravel.
